TV Terror / Awake
« on: March 12, 2012, 07:45:24 AM »
Okay, so it's not technically "horror"... though, some might argue that point. AWAKE is a new series (only 2 episodes released) about a detective who, while driving home with his family one night, gets in a horrific car crash. Here's where things get weird: after the crash, he loses the ability to tell whether he's asleep or awake. In one life, only his wife survived the crash -- however, in the other life, it is his son who survived. Both worlds are connected, and while it is impossible for him to ever know which is the true reality, he has no intention of giving up either or ever coming to the realization of which is which.

It's interested as well, since the cases he takes on as a detective are always somehow linked from one world to the other, and many times insights or clues that he uncovers in the one life will carry over and help him to solve a case in the other life. It sounds gimmicky, but it works. And personally, I've enjoyed both episodes tremendously.

While my original fear was that the plot could become old reeeeeally quickly, they've managed to toss in a couple of curveballs that I'm looking forward to see resolved. And provided they maintain fresh material and keep the series spinning in new directions, I can see it doing extremely well.

Has anyone seen this?

Blood Soaked News / Paranormal Activity 4
« on: March 08, 2012, 08:18:28 PM »
I'll admit, I'm actually looking forward to it. While I didn't necessarily love PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2, I would still rather sit down and watch one of the PA films than any of the SAW sequels (mind you, I said sequels, since I quite enjoyed the first SAW film). When PA:3 was released, I was sure it was going to be horrible -- and although the ending was bad, the rest of the film was pretty damn tense. I like the creativity of them, and the pacing: they establish a formula; an expectation, and yet still manage to find an inventive way to present the material (in PA:3, they introduced the oscillating camera, which I thought was employed really effectively).

I don't know what all they have planned for the next film, but they were smart to leave enough questions unanswered, thus making room for another sequel. And while I'm not expecting it to be groundbreaking, I'm certain it will at the very least be entertaining, which is why I'm looking forward to it. :)

« on: March 07, 2012, 12:26:34 PM »
To all the members at the Blood Theatre, I have a favour to ask. Could you please help us by promoting our site and forums as much as you can, to anyone you know who is interested in horror? Once the word has spread that we are back online, I'm sure that we'll have an active and excellent horror community, but until word gets out, we need your support and your help to direct people over here!

So please, if you have the opportunity to tell a friend about the Blood Theatre, or to get a new member to sign up on the forum, we'd greatly appreciate it!

Blood Soaked News / Evil Dead Remake
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:19:27 AM »
Anyone keeping up on this one? So far, only one location image from the upcoming remake has surfaced:

The screenplay was rewritten by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody (Jennifer's Body), and so far is billing Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez and Lou Taylor Pucci as the stars of the film. Not too much else has been revealed, except obviously this one will be shot on an exponentially higher budget than Sam Raimi's original classic, which will most likely give it that sleak, polished Hollywood look.

Production was/is supposed to begin this month, with an April 2013 release.

Pretty sure the last thing I picked up were copies of Rosemary's Baby and Invitation to Hell on DVD.

The Burial Ground / New here? Introduce yourself!
« on: March 07, 2012, 06:58:10 AM »
Thought it was a good idea to have an on-going thread for new member introductions. If nothing else, it's a good place to start if you're just signing up to the forum, so we can give you a proper Blood Theatre welcome!

I'm sure you all know me ( :D ) but for those who don't, I'm the editor and founder of the Blood Theatre. I started the site back in 2002 in an effort to contribute something to the online horror community and create a good resource for horror fans. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone who comes across the site, and joins the Blood Theatre community!

TV Terror / American Horror Story
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:11:40 AM »
It took me about half a dozen episodes to decide how I felt about the show, but after watching the first season, AMERICAN HORROR STORY is easily something I would recommend to any horror fan. Well written, compelling horror drama which draws heavily upon several (wait for it) influential American horror films, including: The Shining, The Amityville Horror, House on Haunted Hill, 13 Ghosts, Beetlejuice, and more. Honestly, the show has a lot to offer -- everything from excellent character development, to just downright spooky and atmospheric scenes.

Who here has seen some (or all) of the series?

All Things Horror / Last Horror Film You Watched

Pretty straightforward... just post the most recent horror flick you saw!

Resident Evil ... so flawed, but still so fun.

All Things Horror / Halloween 2 (Rob Zombie)
« on: March 05, 2012, 04:33:57 PM »
I only watched this film once, back when it first hit DVD, and after I watched the movie I wrote up the semi-scathing review that's still up on the Blood Theatre: http://thebloodtheatre.com/?p=112

But today, as I was working on the site, I put it on in the background because I was curious to see if it was as bad as I remember it being, and if I would still dislike it as much. And the short answer is... yes, I still dislike it. What I do admire about it, however, is how savage and raw the killings are. Rob Zombie just knows how to make on-screen violence almost physically resonate in the viewer. However, it was just too bizarre and unfocused to really feel like a "Halloween" movie.

The fact that Loomis is portrayed as such a jackass; that Michael's mother returns in a trippy Mrs. Voorhees-esque fashion; that we see Michael Myers frequently without the mask on; that reality itself is distorted in some scenes... it's all too weird for me. Furthermore, what I love about Michael Myers is that, aside from being physically shaped like a human being, he is essentially an empty vessel: a cold, methodical, unfeeling killer. When Rob Zombie has Michael Myers grunt in effort as he's performing a brutal kill really ruins the idea of Myers being a "boogeyman" to me. If he is too human, he's no longer scary, and the brutal violence isn't enough to maintain the tension in the film.

Anyways, thoughts?

The Site / Welcome back to the forums!
« on: March 05, 2012, 03:23:43 PM »
Greetings boils and ghouls, and welcome back to the Blood Theatre forums! Here is where you can interact with other fans of the genre from all over the world, and engage in a discussion of all things horror! It's also an easy way to touch base with the contributing writers and staff here at the BT.

While we hope you enjoy your time here, we ask only that you keep in mind one basic guideline: be respectful of one another. As a discussion forum, we welcome heated debates and differences of opinion, but it should never result in slanderous remarks, racial slurs, or anything of the like. Furthermore, while many of the films we love in the horror genre have an excessive amount of gore and nudity, the Blood Theatre has a zero tolerance against pornographic material.

Once again, on behalf of myself and the staff of the Blood Theatre: welcome! We look forward to meeting you all!
