Ugly, The

1997 / d. Scott Reynolds
Inventive Aussie thriller that owes much of its popularity to its inclusion on the Boogeymen DVD. Timid sociopath and serial murderer Simon Cartwright specifically requests psychologist Dr. Karen Schumaker to evaluate his mental condition. The film then explores the years leading up to his incarceration: everything from his abuse-filled childhood to his gruesome series of straight-razor killings. Stylish black blood, sterile blue lighting, and a compelling story make this one highly recommended.

2001 / d. John Dahl
Another Leelee Sobieski yarn, yes, but a creepy truck driver pursuing teens after a practical joke gone awry makes up for the young cast. Kinky CB radio innuendo and scary chases ala Duel keep this dark ode to the open road in the plus column. Do however avoid the video sequel JOY RIDE 2: DEAD AHEAD.
